What is "Audio Calibration"?
Think of it this way: every home cinema designer and installer has access to the same ingredients. But the difference lies in how each company uses those ingredients—much like the contrast between a Michelin-star chef and a diner cook. It’s not just about having the finest ingredients; it’s about how we prepare, fine-tune, and present them that makes all the difference.
The Truth About Automatic Equalisers
Almost every home cinema system comes with an automatic equaliser designed to correct various issues, including those involving speakers, amplifiers, processors, and even the room itself—yes, the room is a crucial component! However, despite the flashy marketing, these auto EQ systems often fall short. That’s where we come in!
What Goes into Our Calibration Process?
Whether we installed your system or not, we ensure every component is properly set up and functioning as expected. Every detail impacts performance.
Next, we verify the design using an array of tools to ensure each component is performing correctly. Most systems include multiple speakers, and we make sure they all output the same noise. Using pink noise and calibrated microphones, we measure each speaker’s response. If there’s an issue, we diagnose the cause, whether it’s mismatched speakers or faulty components.
A broken system can’t be calibrated. Unlike auto EQ systems, which can’t identify faulty components and often deliver poor results, we ensure everything works perfectly before tuning. Our goal is to achieve seat-to-seat consistency, so every seat in your cinema provides the same incredible audio experience.
Mastering the Bass: Our Expertise
Achieving perfect bass is no easy feat. We tackle frequency cancellations that depend on room size, subwoofer placement, and seating, known as room modes. Adjusting these may involve repositioning subwoofers, adding more, shifting seats, or a combination of these.
When using multiple subwoofers, we ensure they work together seamlessly with precise phase and time alignment. Without this, bass can sound muddy and lack impact.
We also focus on optimising bass management based on the performance of the main speakers. Bass management sends low frequencies to the subwoofers, as most speakers can’t handle very low frequencies at the required SPL. By measuring each speaker’s bass response, we determine the best crossover point to send bass to the subwoofers. Finally, we ensure the bass management points are coherent between each speaker and subwoofer, so all sounds arrive in perfect sync.
The Final Touch
For the perfect finish, we ensure your system reproduces sound with absolute accuracy. A drum should sound like a drum, a sax like a sax, and your music just right.
